What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics is an incredibly efficient  and sustainable system of agriculture that combines hydroponics (growing plants in water) with aquaculture (raising fish).

Aquaponics works by creating a small ecosystem where fish and plants help each other grow. Fish are kept in a tank, and their waste is filtered and converted into nutrients for the plants. The nutrient-rich water is then pumped to the plants growing in separate beds. The plants use these nutrients to grow, filtering and cleaning the water in the process. This clean water is then cycled back to the fish tank, creating a continuous loop.

This innovative approach significantly reduces water usage, up to 90%, compared to traditional farming, as the water is continually recirculated within the system, minimizing waste. The symbiotic relationship between fish and plants also eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers. Aquaponics can be implemented in various environments, including urban settings and areas with unfavorable climates or soil quality where traditional agriculture would not work.

Aquaponics systems promote faster plant growth and higher crop yields, contributing to food security and making fresh, local produce more accessible to any community. Many nutritious fruits and vegetables can be grown in an aquaponics system including tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, lettuces, green onions, kale, Swiss chard, herbs, and spinach. In addition, the fish can also be harvested and eaten.
